Key Words and Terms

Imagine taking a document and removing all peripheral words and vocabulary until you distilled it down to just a few important words that pretty well sum up the main topic of discussion. These would be the primary “key words” (single-word terms) or “key terms” (multiple-word terms) of the document.

To use a simple example, lets reference the website “purina.com”. The primary key terms for this website are “pet food”, “dog food”, and “cat food”. When a web surfer types the phrase “dog food” into the search engine, this website is listed on the first page of search results. You will not find “purina.com” listed on a search for “motor oil” because “purina.com” is not relevant to a search for that key term.
